Asbestos
Surveys, Abatement Designs, and Abatement Inspection Buildings built before 1981 are likely
to have asbestos containing materials (ACM) in a variety of
potential forms. EPA and OSHA have steadily tightened regulations
pertaining to asbestos in renovations and demolitions, so
many clients now recognize the need for qualified asbestos
surveys in preparation for any such project. CDI has had EPA-certified
asbestos building inspectors and abatement project designers
on staff continuously since 1988, when EPA first required
AHERA inspections of all school facilities.
In the intervening years, we
have performed asbestos surveys throughout Alaska on facilities
ranging from private dwellings slated for demolition to multi-million
dollar hospital renovation and expansion projects.
In many cases, we have gone on to prepare asbestos abatement
contract documents to support demolition projects and/or renovations,
and then provided inspection services during abatement.
Our AHERA-certified asbestos inspectors and designers have
close working relationships with municipalities and architects
throughout Southeast Alaska, and we have worked with all the
major abatement firms that are active in Alaska.
Pipes with asbestos
It is our goal to prepare documents that will result in trouble-free
abatement jobs with the minimum number of change orders. We
strive for fair value for our clients as well as for the abatement
contractors.
Environmental
Monitoring CDI has
a wide range of experience in developing and implementing sampling
programs for a wide variety of projects. These can include:
Indoor air sampling for mold, dust, asbestos,
or volatile organic compounds
Surface water and storm water sampling
for parameters such as fecal coliform, turbidity, pH, or
total suspended solids
Long-term groundwater monitoring for
petroleum hydrocarbons or heavy metals
We will evaluate the problem and review
the environmental regulations with you to develop a sampling
program that will meet both your needs and those of the regulating
agency.

Hazardous
Materials Management CDI can inspect your facility and determine
whether there are any associated hazardous waste concerns.
We can prepare waste profiles and manifests for the proper
shipping and disposal of your hazardous and non-hazardous
wastes including used oil, antifreeze, flammable liquids,
paint-related materials, and corrosive liquids. CDI is the
prime contractor for the Southeast Conference Household Hazardous
Waste Collection Program serving 12 communities in Southeast
Alaska and Prince William Sound.
Underground
Storage Tank (UST) Assessment and Release Investigations
Over time, underground storage tanks can fail, particularly
if the tank is in contact with groundwater or if the fill and
return lines get damaged. CDI can provide rapid spill response
in the event of a catastrophic loss, or CDI can conduct a site
assessment to determine if the ground has been contaminated
from a slow leak. We can develop clean-up plans for contaminated
soil removal and disposal, and work with you and the regulators
to get your site cleaned and approved.
Contaminated
Site Characterization and Clean-Up
CDI has many years of experience identifying and addressing
contamination in soil and groundwater at sites ranging from
small, residential heating oil tank clean-ups, to CERCLA clean-ups
on federal lands. Whether it’s initial site characterization,
directing the clean-up effort, on-site soil remediation, groundwater
monitoring or hazardous waste iidentification transport and
disposal, CDI has the expertise as well as the
working relationships with regional clean-up contractors and
waste shipping and disposal facilities to get the job done efficiently
and in compliance with environmental regulations.
Health
and Safety Plan Preparation
Government regulations require that most companies have a
health and safety plan for their operations, as well as for
environmental clean-up operations. CDI has developed Safety
Site and Health Plans for a wide variety of projects and company
safety programs.
Quality Assurance/Quality Control
and Data Review
CDI provides third-party data review for quality assurance/quality
control (QA/QC) purposes to assist clients in data validation.
Our expertise is generally in water quality data review; however,
we have a chemist on staff that can perform QA/QC reviews for
a wide variety of data

Phase
I and II Environmental Site Assessments
CDI routinely performs site assessments for property owners
seeking to sell their property or for prospective buyers of
a property. Our Phase I assessments include a thorough on-site
inspection of the property, research into the property history,
and a review of all available environmental information about
the property and the surrounding area. Where potential sources
of contamination are identified during the Phase I, we may recommend
a Phase II assessment, which involves sampling and further investigation.
For other property transfers we may conduct a more streamlined
version of a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, called a
Transaction Screen Analysis.
